On the Move
bridging the gap between clinical practice and community
On the Move is an evidenced-based fall prevention program developed by the University of Pittsburgh. Maria Francis, our lead instructor, is a certified OTM instructor and received her certification through the New Mexico Department of Health. Individuals who have an interest in fitness and a love of older adults, such as Francis make the best instructors. Villages of Santa Fe is licensed to provide this program.
One the Move bridges the gap between clinical practice and community with classes focusing on gait, with specialized walking and stepping patterns to promote improved timing and coordination for walking.
This program is for older adults with physical disabilities:
-
Parkinson’s
-
Alzheimer’s
-
Arthritis
-
Diabetes
-
Stroke
-
Heart disease
-
Peripheral neuropathy
Or recovering from an illness or surgery.
On the Move is twice a week for 12 weeks for a total of 24 classes. Each class is 45-minutes and encompasses a warm-up, stepping and walking patterns, strengthening exercises, and a cool-down. The exercises are done using music selected to complement or facilitate the activity. Though a group class, the exercises can be modified or adjusted to meet the individual needs of the participants.
